Point of Care Ultrasound for the non-specialist;
Everyday practical use that is easier than you dared to imagine!

with Søren Boysen, DVM, DACVECC & Serge Chalhoub, DVM, DACVIM (SAIM)

Lecture description: Using a case-based approach & interactive session, Drs. Søren Boysen and Serge Chalhoub will present & discuss point of care veterinary ultrasound (VetPOCUS) that can be used by general practitioners on a daily basis in general practice.

Dr. Boysen and Dr. Chalhoub, both University of Calgary professors are well known for their banter-filled take in presenting clinical cases. Their complementary specialties motivated them to challenge the traditional structure of didactic lectures; their strong dynamic interaction allows them to share delivery of material and bounce ideas off each other and attendees to provide a different approach to learning.

This is guaranteed not to be your average CE course. Come prepared to be challenged and intrigued by what these two bring; ample clinical practice, wealth of research and mentoring in addition to their years of collegiate instruction. Boysen and Chalhoub know first-hand that the clinical applications of the point of care ultrasound can have a profound impact on patient outcomes.

Lab description: VetPOCUS allows non-specialist practitioners’ to rapidly assess their patients for conditions without compromising patient safety. In this lab, core VetPOCUS ultrasound-scanning techniques including abdominal & thoracic focused assessment with sonography for triage (AFAST/TFAST), cardiovascular FAST (heart and volume status) & lung ultrasound will be covered. Participants will learn to identify the glide sign, pleural effusion, abdominal effusion, B lines, pneumothorax, basic cardiac function, fluid tolerance estimations & how to sonographically guide IV catheters into vessels. Through practical, hands-on training on live animals & phantoms, participants will have the opportunity to practice basic ECC ultrasound skills, which they can take directly to the clinical setting. No prior U/S experience is needed.

Wet-lab Assistants: Dr. Cam Friesen & Ms. Leeann Lane
